Assassin's Creed II: Discovery came out for the Nintendo DS in 2009, a time when developers were still figuring out how to translate big console experiences onto the handheld. Ubisoft published it, and it was their attempt to bring the Renaissance setting of Ezio's console adventures into a more portable, side scrolling format. It felt like a companion piece to the main games, something you could play in shorter bursts without needing to be at your TV.

You control Ezio Auditore, an assassin in 15th century Spain, and your main goal is to rescue fellow assassins who have been captured by the Spanish Inquisition. The game plays out across side scrolling stages where you run, climb walls, and leap between platforms. Your main tools are your hidden blade for quick kills and a sword for more direct combat. You also spend a lot of time sneaking past guards, using crowds for cover, and navigating trap filled environments. The pacing is generally quick, with levels that are broken into distinct screens, and the difficulty can spike during some of the more precise platforming sections. It feels like a condensed version of the parkour and stealth the series is known for, all packed into a format that fits in your pocket.
