Okay, so Ariel – The Little Mermaid on the Genesis is way more fun than I expected for a Disney movie tie-in. You’re basically just swimming around collecting shells and pearls, dodging jellyfish and those annoying pufferfish that puff up right in your face. The controls take a second to get used to—Ariel’s tail has this floaty momentum—but once you figure it out, you’re zipping through coral reefs and secret caves like it’s nothing.
Ursula’s minions show up now and then to mess with you, and the boss fights are surprisingly decent for a kids’ game. The music’s got that classic Genesis sound chip vibe, and the colors pop in that early ‘90s way where everything’s just slightly too bright. It’s short, sure, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about smashing open clams with your tail. If you ever rented this as a kid, it holds up better than you’d think.
