I remember picking up Animaniacs for the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive in Europe, back in 1994. It was published by Konami, a familiar name from that era, and it landed right in the middle of the 16-bit platformer boom. The cartridge felt like a direct ticket into the cartoon's chaotic world, a feeling a lot of games from that time aimed for but didn't always achieve.

You control Yakko, Wakko, and Dot, switching between them on the fly to use their unique abilities. Yakko swings a giant mallet, Wakko uses a slingshot for ranged attacks, and Dot can charm enemies with a kiss to temporarily stun them. The main goal is to navigate through themed stages, from a movie studio backlot to a haunted castle, collecting goodies and rescuing the Warner siblings' friends. The game is structured screen by screen, with some light exploration and a fair number of enemies to dispatch. It's not an easy game; the platforming requires precision, and the enemy placement keeps you on your toes. Playing it feels like you're directing a slightly unhinged cartoon episode where you have to do all the stunts yourself.
