About American Gladiators
I remember playing American Gladiators on the Sega Genesis back in 1992. It was developed by Imagitec Design, and it was one of those games that tried to capture the feel of the over the top TV show. On a system filled with platformers and beat 'em ups, this was a straightforward attempt at a sports competition title. You didn't get a deep story; you just jumped into the arena.
You control a contestant trying to beat the gladiators in a series of mini games. The main goal is to win each event and accumulate enough points to become the champion. The gameplay shifts from event to event; one moment you're climbing a rope on The Wall while a gladiator tries to shake you off, the next you're firing a pugil stick in Joust. The controls are simple, but the difficulty comes from the aggressive AI and the quick transitions between different types of challenges. It feels like a chaotic, fast paced scramble from start to finish.
