Alex Kidd in Enchanted Castle is one of those weird, charming Genesis platformers that feels like it was designed by someone who had too much coffee. You play as Alex, this little guy with a ridiculous haircut who punches rocks and rides weird hoverbikes through floating castles. The controls take a second to get used to—his jump feels a little floaty at first—but once it clicks, you’ll be bouncing off enemies’ heads and hunting for hidden power-ups in no time.
The levels are full of strange little details, like enemies that look like living dumplings or bosses who challenge you to rock-paper-scissors (seriously). The music’s got that classic Sega synth sound, all bouncy and slightly offbeat. It’s not the hardest game out there, but some of the later stages will absolutely wreck you if you’re not careful. If you grew up with a Genesis or just love weird retro platformers, this one’s a fun little time capsule.
