About Action Replay (program)
Action Replay was not a game but a cheat device cartridge for the Sega Genesis, also known as the Mega Drive. Released by Datel, it plugged directly into the console's cartridge slot, allowing you to load a game on top of it. In an era where game secrets were shared on playgrounds or in magazines, this hardware offered a more direct, if controversial, method of altering your gaming experience.
You don't control a character; you interact with a menu system to input codes that modify the game running in the console. The main objective is to activate cheats like infinite lives, level skipping, or invincibility. Its signature mechanics involve browsing a code database, carefully entering long hexadecimal strings, and testing to see if the desired effect, such as all weapons or permanent power-ups, took hold. The process could be finicky, with incorrect codes often freezing the game, but successfully enabling a cheat felt like unlocking a hidden layer of control over a familiar world. It transformed challenging games into sandboxes for experimentation.
