ATP Tour Championship Tennis is one of those old-school Sega Genesis sports games that somehow nails the feel of tennis without overcomplicating things. You pick your player—some recognizable pros from the '90s ATP circuit—and jump straight into matches that actually require a bit of finesse. The controls are simple but not dumbed down: you’ve got your basic shots, lobs, and smashes, but timing them right is the difference between an ace and a weak return.
What surprised me was how much the game rewards patience. Rushing the net like a maniac gets you wrecked, but if you mix up your shots and watch your opponent’s positioning, you can actually play some proper tactical points. The animation’s a little stiff by today’s standards, but the ball physics feel decent, and there’s something satisfying about nailing a cross-court winner.
It’s not the flashiest tennis game out there, but it holds up way better than most early '90s sports titles. If you’ve got a Genesis lying around, it’s worth a few sets.
