Zoids Legacy came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Atelier Double. It was part of that wave of GBA titles that tried to pack a full console style RPG into your pocket, a time when you could find these surprisingly deep mecha games alongside the usual platformers and ports. It built on the Zoids franchise, letting you pilot the animal themed mechanical units in a standalone story.

You control a pilot who assembles a team of Zoids, customizing them with various weapons and parts you find or buy. The main goal is to travel across the world, recruiting other pilots and battling rival teams in turn based tactical fights on a grid. Two of its signature mechanics are the extensive Zoid customization, where you swap out limbs and armor to change stats and abilities, and the way you capture enemy Zoids in battle to add them to your own roster. The pacing is methodical, with a lot of time spent in menus tweaking your squad and managing resources between story driven combat encounters. It feels like running a garage full of giant, customizable war machines.
