Zatchbell! Electric Arena came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2003, developed by Banpresto. It was part of that wave of games based on popular anime, a familiar sight on the handheld at the time. You control a young boy named Kiyo, who partners with a friendly mamodo named Zatch. The story follows the manga, placing you right into the mamodo battle tournament where the last one standing gets to rule their world.

You guide Kiyo through a top down world, talking to people and finding your way to battle arenas. The main goal is to win these one on one fights to progress through the tournament brackets. Combat is the core; you input spells for Zatch to cast by pressing specific button combinations, which uses up your spell book pages. You also need to position Kiyo strategically, as he can be attacked and must collect green baou fruit to recharge Zatch's power. The game moves at a steady pace, with exploration broken up by frequent, sometimes difficult, battles that require quick inputs. It feels like a direct translation of the manga's action, demanding focus and timing to execute spells effectively under pressure.
