Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: Duel Academy came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2005, developed and published by Konami. It was part of that wave of handheld games that tried to capture the feel of a full anime season, letting you step into the world of the show without needing a console. This one put you right in the middle of the GX storyline, which was a solid follow-up for fans of the original series who were still carrying their Game Boys.

You play as a new student at Duel Academy, creating your own character and getting sorted into one of the three dormitories. The main goal is to climb the ranks from a lowly Slifer Red to the top Obelisk Blue by winning duels and progressing through the school year. You spend your days screen by screen, exploring the island campus, talking to other students, and challenging them to card battles to earn new cards and DP, the in-game currency. Deck building is central; you're constantly tweaking your strategy, fusing monsters, and trying to counter the specific decks of rivals like Jaden and Chazz. The pacing is deliberate, almost like a school simulator with a card game at its heart, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly if you haven't built a versatile deck. It feels like you're actually managing your reputation and skills as a duelist, not just playing a series of matches.
