About Yu-gi-oh! Duel Monsters Ii - Yamikai Kettouki (japan)

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters II - Yamikai Kettouki came out in 2000 for the Game Boy Color, developed by Konami. It was one of several Yu-Gi-Oh games released during that period, a time when the handheld was filled with adaptations of popular anime and card games. This one never left Japan, so playing it meant navigating menus and card text in Japanese, which added an extra layer of challenge for non-native speakers.

You control a duelist exploring various locations on a top-down map, moving screen by screen to find opponents. Your main goal is to build a strong deck and defeat a series of duelists to progress the story. The game uses password-based deck building; instead of opening packs, you enter card passwords from the physical trading card game to add them to your collection. Combat is turn-based, played out on a virtual mat where you summon monsters, set traps, and activate spells. The pacing can be slow, especially with the password system, and the difficulty is noticeable if your deck isn't well constructed. It feels like a methodical, almost meditative process of building your ideal deck and testing it duel by duel.
