About Yu-gi-oh! - Yugi Vs Joey Volume 1 - Gameboy Advance Video (f)(independent)

I picked up Yu-Gi-Oh! - Yugi Vs Joey Volume 1 on the Game Boy Advance, a release from around 2004. It was one of those Game Boy Advance Video cartridges, so it's not a traditional game you play but a compressed episode of the anime you watch. Majesco handled the publishing for these in North America, putting full episodes onto these little carts. It's a strange piece of the platform's history, a time when they experimented with portable video on a device not really built for it.

You don't control a character; you just watch the duel between Yugi and Joey from the anime unfold. The main objective is simply to follow the story, seeing the card strategies play out just like in the show. The video quality is low and pixelated, a necessary compression to fit on the cartridge, and you navigate through it with basic play and pause functions. Since it's a linear recording, there's no gameplay challenge or pacing to speak of; it's a passive experience. It feels like carrying a small, fuzzy piece of the TV show in your pocket, a novelty that was more about convenience than quality.
