About Yakusoku No Chi Riviera (j)(caravan)
I first played Riviera: The Promised Land on my Game Boy Advance back in 2004. It was developed by Sting, a company known for some unique takes on RPGs during that era. The game stood out on the GBA not for its graphics, but for its particular blend of genres, which felt different from the more straightforward adventures available at the time.
You control a young man named Ein, a Grim Angel sent to a doomed world with a single, heavy task. Your goal is to investigate the floating continent of Riviera and ultimately decide its fate. The exploration is methodical, moving screen by screen and interacting with points of interest rather than roaming freely. Combat is turn-based, but you manage a limited stock of weapons and items that degrade with use, forcing careful choices. You also build relationships with your party members through dialogue options, which can influence their abilities in battle. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and some of the puzzles can be quite challenging. Playing it feels like carefully navigating a delicate, branching story where every decision carries weight.
