You control one of four X-Men, like Wolverine or Storm, and fight through waves of enemies across side-scrolling levels. The main goal is to stop Apocalypse from altering the timeline, which involves battling through his forces across different time periods. The gameplay is straightforward: you move from left to right, clearing each screen of enemies before progressing. Each character has a unique set of basic attacks and a special mutant power you can activate, though using it drains your health. The levels are linear but packed with enemies, making it a constant fight. It can get quite difficult, especially with some cheap hits from off-screen, but swapping between characters to use their different abilities helps. Playing it feels like a brisk, challenging brawl that captures the simple fun of comic book action.
