You control one of several X-Men characters, like Wolverine or Cyclops, and face off against a series of opponents in one-on-one battles. The main objective is to fight your way through the tournament mode, defeating everyone to become the top mutant. Signature mechanics include building up a super meter by landing hits, which you can then spend to unleash a character's special move; you also have a simple three-button control scheme for punches, kicks, and jumps. The pacing is fairly quick, with matches that don't drag on, though the difficulty can spike against certain AI opponents who block a lot.
