X-COM: Apocalypse is a turn-based strategy game released for MS-DOS in 1997. Developed by Mythos Games Ltd. and published by MicroProse Software, Inc., the game presents a bird's-eye view perspective. It is set in a future where humanity's last refuge is the massive, self-contained city of Mega-Primus, which comes under threat when a mysterious portal opens and releases alien UFOs.

Players command the X-COM organization, managing both strategic city operations and tactical ground combat. The primary interface, called the Cityscape, involves monitoring the city for alien activity, dispatching vehicles to intercept UFOs, and overseeing the organization's budget. Resources must be allocated to hire personnel, purchase weapons and equipment, and maintain vehicles. Players must also manage relationships with various human factions within the city, whose support can shift based on X-COM's actions. When alien threats are located, the game shifts to the Battlescape for tactical, turn-based combat where players directly control squads of agents.

Progression is driven by responding to alien incursions, capturing alien technology and specimens, and researching new equipment. The game features larger maps and a more complex city environment compared to earlier titles in the series. In addition to combating aliens, players encounter and interact with multiple human groups, including cults, criminal gangs, and corporate entities. A notable feature is the option to play tactical battles in either a turn-based or real-time mode, offering different approaches to combat scenarios.
