I picked up Woody Woodpecker for the Game Boy Color back in 2001. It was developed by Eidetic, the same studio that later made the Syphon Filter series. This was a time when licensed platformers were common on the handheld, and this one fit right in with that trend.
You control Woody Woodpecker through a series of side scrolling levels. Your main goal is to rescue your nephew and niece from the clutches of a dog catcher. You run, jump, and use Woody's signature peck attack to break open crates and defeat enemies like bees and spiders. The game is structured screen by screen, with some light exploration to find hidden items and extra lives. The pacing is fairly quick, though some enemy placements can feel cheap and make certain sections frustrating. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes clumsy, cartoon adventure.
