I picked up Wolfenstein 3D on the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a port of the original PC game by id Software. It was a strange but welcome sight on the handheld, a first-person shooter squeezed onto a system better known for platformers and RPGs. You control Allied agent B.J. Blazkowicz, and your job is to escape from Castle Wolfenstein by fighting through its maze-like floors. The game progresses screen by screen; you push forward into new rooms, clearing them of guards and SS soldiers. You collect keys to open locked doors, search for hidden passages in the walls, and manage a small arsenal that starts with a pistol. The pace is relentless, and the levels feel like a confusing labyrinth if you don't pay attention to the map. It's a tense, straightforward blast of action that feels surprisingly immediate on the small screen.
