I first played Wolfenstein 3D on the Game Boy Advance back in 2002. It was a port of the original PC game by id Software, and for a handheld at the time, it was a pretty direct way to experience a foundational shooter. You could carry those fast-paced corridors in your pocket, which felt novel next to the platformers and RPGs that usually dominated the system.

You control B.J. Blazkowicz, an Allied spy, and your goal is to escape from Castle Wolfenstein by fighting through room after room of Nazi guards and soldiers. The game progresses screen by screen; you push forward, clear an area of enemies, and search for keys to unlock the next set of doors. Combat is straightforward, relying on a rapid-fire pistol and collecting ammo for a machine gun, but the levels are mazelike and enemies respawn if you backtrack. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty comes from being quickly overwhelmed if you aren't careful. It feels chaotic and immediate, a constant scramble for health and bullets while navigating confusing stone hallways.
