About Whale’s Voyage
Whale's Voyage is a science fiction role-playing game released for MS-DOS in 1993. Developed by neo Software Produktions GmbH and published by Pro One Software, it is a first-person dungeon crawler that incorporates turn-based combat and trade mechanics. The narrative premise involves a traveler and their crew stranded in orbit around a distant planet, where they must earn money and upgrade their ship to survive in a hazardous region of space.
Players begin by creating a party of four crew members through a character generation system. This involves selecting a father and mother for each character, with options including humans and an alien species not otherwise seen in the game. An educational background is then chosen, which determines the character's class from six possibilities: Soldier, Bounty Hunter, Arania, Biochemist, Psionian, or Doctor. Each class grants access to specific skills such as healing, trap setting, or computer use. Players also distribute points among six primary attributes for each character, which increases a mutation level. Initial exploration is limited to a single planet, but earning credits allows the purchase of fuel to travel to other worlds within the local solar system.
The game world consists of six distinct planets, each presented as a pseudo-3D maze populated with non-player characters and explored from a first-person perspective. Progression is driven by conversing with these characters and completing their quests. Combat is infrequent and occurs seamlessly within the exploration environment, using a turn-based system where players select attack options for each party member. Space travel between planets is handled through menus, but journeys can be interrupted by ambushes that trigger separate turn-based space battles viewed from a top-down perspective. These encounters use an action point system to determine the number of turns. A core gameplay loop involves trading goods between planets to generate profit, which funds the upgrading of the ship, named the Whale, with improved engines and weapons.
