I first played Warlocked on my Game Boy Color back in 2000. It was developed by Bits Studios and published by Nintendo, arriving late in the handheld's life when ambitious, colorful titles were pushing its limits. The game stood out for trying to fit a real-time strategy experience onto a portable screen, a rare and tricky feat at the time.

You control two distinct factions, the humans and the beasts, leading their armies across a fantasy world. Your main goal is to destroy the enemy's base on each map. You gather resources like mana and gold to build structures, train units such as knights and wizards, and direct them into combat. The screen-by-screen exploration means you manage your economy and army one section of the map at a time, which keeps things focused. Combat involves direct control of a hero unit with a sword or spells, adding an action element to the strategy. The pacing is deliberate, requiring you to plan your moves carefully, and the difficulty can be steep as you manage multiple tasks on a small display. It feels surprisingly involved for a pocket strategy game, making each completed mission a solid accomplishment.
