About Wade Hixtons Counter Punch (u)(independent)
Wade Hixton's Counter Punch came out in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance, an independent release from developer Inferno Games and publisher DSI Games. It arrived during a time when the GBA library was full of inventive takes on established genres, and this one clearly drew inspiration from Nintendo's own Punch-Out series.
You control Wade Hixton, a mechanic who gets pulled into the world of professional boxing. The main objective is to climb the ranks by defeating a series of exaggerated, cartoonish opponents. The gameplay revolves around reading your opponent's tells, dodging or blocking their attacks, and then counter-punching when they are vulnerable. Each fighter has a unique pattern you must learn, and the game progresses screen by screen through a world map between matches. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be sharp, demanding precise timing to advance. It feels like a satisfying test of reflexes and memory as you slowly master each opponent's rhythm.
