Wade Hixton's Counter Punch came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, published by Destination Software. It was part of that wave of GBA games that tried to capture the feel of older arcade genres, a straightforward boxing title that didn't rely on big licenses. You play as Wade Hixton, a salesman who gets stranded in the odd town of Big Pineapple and has to fight his way through a local boxing tournament to earn enough money to get home.

You control Wade directly, moving him left and right to dodge and line up punches. The main goal is to win each match in the tournament by knocking out your opponent. The signature mechanics are the counter punch system, where you must block an incoming attack and immediately strike back for major damage, and a super punch meter that builds as you land hits. Matches are fast and require good timing; mistiming a block leaves you wide open. The difficulty can be sharp, especially in later fights where opponents are more aggressive. It feels like a tense back and forth, a quick game of reading your opponent's rhythm and capitalizing on their mistakes.
