I picked up Universal Studios Monsters for the Game Boy Color back when it came out in 2000. It was developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Activision, a time when licensed games based on movie monsters were a common sight on handhelds. The game tries to capture the atmosphere of those old black and white films on the small screen, which was an interesting challenge for the hardware.

You control a young boy named Derek through a large, interconnected mansion. Your main goal is to rescue your friend from the clutches of the classic monsters. You explore the mansion room by room, solving environmental puzzles to unlock new areas. Combat is simple; you throw rocks to stun the various monster minions that patrol the halls. You also collect items like keys and special objects to progress, and you must manage your health and limited rock supply carefully. The game can be quite difficult, with some obscure puzzles and enemies that drain your life quickly if you are not cautious. It feels like a slow, methodical crawl through a haunted house where every corner could hold a new challenge.
