About Trick Star
I picked up Trick Star for the Game Boy Advance back when it was new, a title that never got a wide release outside Japan. It was developed by Atelier Double and published by Starfish, a pairing known for niche puzzle and action games on the system. This was during the GBA's peak, a time when developers were experimenting with the hardware's capabilities, often producing unique, smaller scale experiences like this one.
In Trick Star, you control a young magician navigating a series of single screen puzzle rooms. Your main goal is to collect all the stars in each stage to unlock the exit. The core mechanics involve drawing symbols on the touch screen to cast spells; you might conjure a block to create a step, or summon a gust of wind to push an object. You also manipulate the environment directly, sliding ice blocks to form paths or activating switches to alter the room's layout. The puzzles start simple but quickly demand careful planning, as a single misplaced action can force a restart. Progressing through its cleverly designed stages provides a quiet, persistent satisfaction.
