If you grew up watching Treasure Planet, this GBA adaptation is a surprisingly solid little adventure. You start off as Jim Hawkins—y’know, the reckless but lovable kid—running around the docks, jumping between platforms, and getting into scrapes with pirates. The controls feel a bit stiff at first, but once you get used to them, swinging around with the solar surfer is actually pretty fun.
What surprised me was how much they packed into this tiny cart. You’ve got ship battles where you dodge asteroids and blast enemy sails, plus these weirdly tense stealth sections where you’re sneaking past guards. The art style nails the movie’s vibe, even if some of the sprites are a little chunky. And yeah, John Silver’s voice lines are compressed to hell, but hearing him growl “Jimbo!” still hits the nostalgia button hard.
It’s not perfect—some of the later platforming gets frustrating, and the treasure hunting bits could’ve used more depth—but for a licensed game, it’s way better than it had any right to be. If you’ve got a soft spot for the movie, it’s worth dusting off your GBA for this one.
