It was developed by Natsume and brought the skateboarding series to the handheld, a time when getting a decent 3D-style sports game on a small screen was a real novelty. You pick a pro skater like Tony Hawk and skate through levels, trying to score points by landing tricks. Your main goal is to complete specific objectives in each stage, things like achieving a high score, collecting the letters S-K-A-T-E, or finding the hidden tape. The controls are built around timing button presses for ollies and combining directions for different grabs and flips. You have to manage your balance to avoid bailing, and you build a special meter for even bigger point moves. The game moves quickly, and some of the objectives can be tough to nail on the small screen. It feels satisfying when you finally link a few tricks together and land a solid combo without wiping out.
