About Tonic Trouble
I remember picking up Tonic Trouble for the Game Boy Color back in 1999, a time when the handheld was full of platformers trying to capture that 3D console feel. Ubisoft published it, and it was one of those titles that felt ambitious for the hardware, translating a 3D world into a 2D side-scrolling adventure. It wasn't the most famous game on the system, but it had a distinct look that stood out on the small, color screen.
You control Ed, a clumsy alien janitor, whose main job is to clean up a mutagenic green goo he accidentally spilled on Earth. The objective is straightforward: explore levels screen by screen, platforming across ledges and avoiding enemies, to find and collect the scattered pieces of your spaceship. Key mechanics include using a plunger as your primary weapon to attack bizarre creatures, and solving simple environmental puzzles, often by hitting switches or navigating hazardous terrain. The pacing is methodical, with some levels requiring careful observation to find hidden paths, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in later stages. It feels like a slightly janky but earnest adventure, where every successfully recovered ship part brings a small, tangible sense of progress.
