About Thunderbirds
Thunderbirds on the Game Boy Advance came out in 2000, developed by Vicarious Visions. It was part of that early wave of GBA titles, a time when developers were figuring out what the handheld could do. The game is based on the classic marionette adventure series, translating its world of International Rescue into a side scrolling action format.
You control the Tracy brothers, primarily Scott and Virgil, piloting their vehicles like Thunderbird 1 and 2 on various rescue missions. The main objective is to navigate through levels, avoid hazards, and complete mission specific tasks to save people in peril. Signature mechanics include switching between vehicles for different purposes; Thunderbird 1 handles fast flight and bombing runs, while the slower, bulkier Thunderbird 2 deploys pods and equipment. You also manage a limited fuel supply, forcing you to land for refuels at specific pads. The pacing is methodical, with some levels feeling more like careful logistics than frantic action, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly during precise platforming sections. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes clunky, simulation of operating heavy rescue machinery.
