Three Lions came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, a time when handheld RPGs were starting to get more ambitious. It was developed by Tarquin and published by Bam, fitting right in with other fantasy adventures on the system. The game doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it offers a solid quest that feels right at home on the small screen.

You control a young hero tasked with recovering three magical lion statues to lift a curse from the land. You explore the world screen by screen, moving through forests, towns, and dungeons. Combat is turn based; you select attacks, spells, or items from a menu when you encounter enemies. A key mechanic is collecting the three lion statues, which are hidden in dungeons and guarded by bosses. The pacing is deliberate, and some of the later dungeons can be quite challenging, requiring careful resource management. It feels like a thoughtful, compact adventure that rewards persistence.
