I picked up The Lost Vikings on Game Boy Advance when it came out in 2003, a port of the original Blizzard game. It was a puzzle platformer that felt distinct on a system packed with action titles. You control three vikings, each with a unique ability: Erik runs fast and jumps, Baleog fights with a sword and bow, and Olaf blocks attacks with his shield and can be used as a platform. The goal is to guide all three to the exit of each level, which requires constant switching between them.

You explore screen by screen, solving environmental puzzles that demand you use the vikings' skills in combination. One character might need to stand on a switch to open a door for another, or you might use Olaf's shield to block a laser while Erik jumps across a gap. The game is methodical and often difficult, punishing mistakes with instant death traps. It feels satisfying to finally piece together the correct sequence of moves after several failed attempts.
