Link’s Awakening DX is one of those Game Boy Color gems that still holds up—it’s got that classic Zelda feel but with a weird, dreamy twist. You wash up on Koholint Island, and right away, the place feels off. The owl won’t stop giving cryptic advice, the townsfolk are oddly chill about a stranger in green pajamas, and somehow, you’re expected to collect instruments to wake up a giant fish. Sure, why not?

The dungeons are tight little puzzles with just enough challenge to make you feel clever when you figure them out. And the DX version? Those extra colors actually matter—seeing the red tunic pop or the eerie glow in certain areas adds a surprising amount of atmosphere. The trading side quest is still bizarre (why does everyone want a banana?), but stumbling into secrets like the photo studio or the Chamber Dungeon keeps things unpredictable.

It’s quirky, a little melancholic, and packed with those “aha!” moments Zelda does so well. If you missed this one back in the day, it’s worth digging up—just don’t expect Hyrule.
