About Tennis No Ouji-sama 2004 : Stylish Silver
I picked up Tennis no Ouji-sama 2004: Stylish Silver for the Game Boy Advance back when it came out. It was developed by Konami, part of that wave of sports and anime tie-ins that filled the portable's library. This one is based on The Prince of Tennis manga, so you know it's going to be about intense schoolyard matches and rivalries, but it finds its own space among other GBA sports titles by focusing on character-driven gameplay rather than pure simulation.
You control one of the series' tennis prodigies, working your way through tournaments and story matches. The main goal is to climb the ranks, defeat powerful opponents, and ultimately become the best. The gameplay hinges on a few key mechanics: a timing-based shot system where you press a button as the ball connects to execute different swings, special super moves unique to each character that drain a meter, and a court positioning element where you manually run your player to intercept the ball. The matches can be surprisingly difficult, demanding quick reflexes and a good sense of when to use your powerful techniques. It feels like a fast-paced back-and-forth duel where a single mistimed button press can lose you the point.
