About Tales Of Phantasia (j)(eurasia)

I first played Tales of Phantasia on the Game Boy Advance back in 2006, a port handled by Namco. It was a solid RPG to have in your pocket during that era, a time when the GBA library was full of ambitious adaptations of console games.

You control Cless Alven, a young swordsman, as he sets out to avenge his village and uncovers a plot that spans generations. Your main goal is to stop the sorcerer Dhaos, which involves traveling across a world map, exploring towns and dungeons screen by screen, and engaging in real time battles. The combat uses the Linear Motion Battle System; you move your character freely on a 2D plane, executing basic attacks and special Artes by inputting directional commands. You also manage a party of characters who can cast spells or use items, and you can cook recipes from gathered ingredients to restore health. The pacing is brisk for an RPG, though some dungeons can feel lengthy, and the difficulty has noticeable spikes, especially with certain bosses. It feels like a substantial adventure packed into a handheld, demanding both quick reflexes and thoughtful preparation.
