Enemies appear on the field, and battles happen in real time on a side-scrolling plane where you directly control Cress. You tap buttons for basic sword attacks, use special Artes, and can even issue simple commands to your party members. The game does not hold your hand, and some dungeons can feel long, requiring careful management of your limited healing items. Moving through the world and mastering the timing of your strikes makes the entire experience feel active and directly in your hands.
