About Taito Memorial - Chase H.q. - Secret Police (japan)
I picked up Taito Memorial: Chase H.Q. - Secret Police for the Game Boy Color, a Japan-only release from around 2000. It was part of that late-era push for the handheld, a time when developers were still squeezing what they could out of the hardware. Taito handled this one, bundling a couple of their arcade titles into a single cartridge. It felt like a very specific kind of time capsule, a collection meant for players already familiar with the originals.
In this game, you control an undercover police officer driving a sports car. Your main objective is to chase down and stop criminal vehicles before they can escape. The core gameplay involves navigating city streets from a top-down perspective, ramming the suspect's car to damage it, and eventually forcing it to a halt. You have a turbo boost for quick bursts of speed, and you must also manage your fuel gauge to avoid running out mid-pursuit. The action is fast and the stages are short, but the controls can feel a bit slippery, making the chases more challenging than they first appear. It captures that specific tension of a high-speed pursuit on a small screen.
