I picked up Super Chinese Fighter EX for the Game Boy Color back when it came out, a release from Culture Brain. It was one of those many fighting games trying to find a spot on the handheld, a time when developers were really testing what the little system could do with competitive two player games. This one stood out because it was part of their long running Super Chinese series, which usually mixed role playing with martial arts, but here they went for a straight head to head fighter.

You choose from a roster of characters, each with their own special moves, and battle it out across single player tournaments or by linking two Game Boys for versus mode. The main goal is to deplete your opponent's health bar using a combination of basic attacks, throws, and projectiles. A couple of its key mechanics are the super attacks you build up with a meter and the interactive stages that sometimes have environmental hazards. The pacing is quite fast for a portable fighter of that era, and the difficulty can spike sharply against the computer. It feels like a condensed arcade experience you can carry in your pocket.
