About Star Ocean - Blue Sphere (japan)
Star Ocean: Blue Sphere came out in 2001 for the Game Boy Color, developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix. It was a direct sequel to Star Ocean: The Second Story, arriving at a time when developers were pushing the technical limits of the handheld with more complex RPGs. This one continued the journey of Claude and Rena, picking up right where their last adventure ended.
You control a party of characters, exploring the world screen by screen and engaging in real-time combat with enemies you see on the map. Your main goal is to investigate a mysterious green sphere that is causing a strange sleeping sickness across the planet Expel. The game's signature mechanics include its item creation system, where you combine materials to forge new equipment, and the private action conversations that develop your party members' relationships. Dungeons are multi-layered and require careful navigation, with puzzles and frequent enemy encounters that keep the pacing brisk. The difficulty can be unforgiving, demanding strategic use of your party's unique skills and spells. Playing it feels like managing a small, persistent expedition through a world full of hidden details and sudden dangers.
