Spyro Advance came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Universal Interactive. It was part of that wave of 3D platformer characters making the jump to handhelds, a time when you saw a lot of familiar faces getting 2D adaptations. This one tried to capture the spirit of the console Spyro games on the smaller screen.

You control Spyro, the little purple dragon, running and jumping through a series of themed worlds. Your main goal is to collect gems and dragon eggs, which are scattered everywhere or held by enemies. The signature moves are your flame breath for torching foes and your charge attack for breaking open crates and hitting certain enemies. The levels are laid out screen by screen, and you often have to find a key to unlock the exit portal. The pacing is generally brisk, though some of the later levels can get tricky with their platforming challenges. It feels like a compact, straightforward adventure that gets you right into the action.
