About Sports Pad Football
Sports Pad Football was released for the Sega Master System and was developed by Sega. It came out during a time when accessory based games were an experiment for the console, trying to offer a different kind of interaction. This one required the Sports Pad, a large trackball controller, to play.
You control a team of football players, moving a cursor to pass the ball between them as you advance up the field. The main objective is to score touchdowns against the opposing team. The signature mechanics are all built around the trackball; you spin it to make your player run, and the speed of your spin directly controls your running speed. Passing is done by moving the cursor to a receiver and pressing a button. The game can feel frantic because the trackball allows for very quick movements, making it possible to juke defenders with sharp turns. It feels physical and immediate, like you are directly influencing the players' momentum with your own hand.
