Okay, so Freeze Frame Frenzy is one of those weird little GBA SpongeBob games that actually has a pretty cool gimmick. You run around Bikini Bottom taking photos of stuff—like, literally freezing the action—and then use those snapshots to solve puzzles. Need to cross a gap? Snap a pic of a moving platform mid-air and it’ll stay put. It’s janky in that classic early-2000s handheld way, but somehow that just makes it funnier when Patrick gets stuck in a loop of falling off things.
The levels are packed with dumb little references to the show (yes, you can annoy Squidward), and the pixel art somehow nails SpongeBob’s weird facial expressions. It’s short, and some of the puzzles feel like they were designed by someone who’d had too much Krabby Patty, but that’s part of the charm. If you’ve got a soft spot for licensed games that actually try something different, this one’s worth dusting off.
