Spirits and Spells was a Game Boy Advance release from 2003, developed by Wanadoo. It came out during a time when the handheld was full of side-scrolling adventures, and this one offered a spooky, cartoonish take on the genre. You could choose to play as either a young boy or girl, each with their own slightly different abilities, which was a nice touch for a game from that period.

You guide your character through haunted environments, moving screen by screen to fight off monsters like zombies and skeletons. The main goal is to break a curse by collecting magical pages from a book. Your primary weapon is a slingshot that fires different elemental orbs; you find these orbs scattered around, and switching between them is key to defeating certain enemies or solving simple puzzles. You also collect potion ingredients to restore health. The pacing is fairly straightforward, though some enemy placements can feel cheap and lead to quick restarts. Controlling your character feels a bit floaty, which gives the platforming its own distinct, sometimes clumsy rhythm.
