About Spider-man (france)
I picked up Spider-Man for the Game Boy Color when it came out in 2000, a time when handheld games were mostly simple affairs. This one was developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Activision, which meant it had some solid backing. It was a side-scrolling action game that tried to bring the wall-crawler's world to the small screen, a common goal for comic book games on that system.
You control Spider-Man through a series of levels, swinging and punching your way through various thugs and super villains. The main goal is straightforward: stop the bad guys, which in this case involves a plot with Doctor Octopus. You use his web shooters to swing across gaps and to temporarily trap enemies, a mechanic that feels essential. Combat is basic, relying on a punch and a jump kick to clear rooms. The levels are linear, moving from left to right with some platforming challenges, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in later stages. It feels like a condensed version of a bigger console game, a quick burst of superhero action you can finish in an afternoon.
