Spawn on the Game Boy Color came out in 1999, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was one of many action games on the handheld, based on the popular comic book character. The game arrived when licensed titles were common, trying to capture the dark antihero appeal on a limited color screen.

You control Spawn, moving through side scrolling levels to stop a demonic invasion. Your main goal is to fight through waves of enemies across city streets and otherworldly realms. You use a combination of melee attacks with your necroplasm fueled chains and a projectile attack; you can also find temporary power ups that enhance your damage. The game is structured screen by screen, with some light platforming between combat encounters. It moves at a brisk pace but can be quite difficult, demanding quick reactions to enemy patterns. Playing it feels like a constant, aggressive push against the hordes in front of you.
