Space Invaders X was a Japan only release for the Game Boy Color, arriving late in the system's life. It was developed and published by Taito, the same company behind the original arcade hit. This was part of a wave of colorized updates for classic games that appeared on the handheld, giving older formulas a fresh coat of paint.

You control a laser cannon that moves left and right along the bottom of the screen, firing upward at a formation of descending aliens. Your main objective is to destroy every alien in the wave before they reach the bottom or you run out of lives. Signature mechanics include the aliens' gradual speed increase as their numbers thin, and the occasional appearance of a UFO that flies across the top of the screen for bonus points. The game also features a two player mode using the Game Boy Color's link cable. The pacing is methodical at first, but the tension builds significantly as the aliens get closer and your shots become more frantic. It feels like a tense, strategic race against a slowly advancing clock.
