About Space Channel 5 - Ulala's Cosmic Attack (u)(mode7)
Space Channel 5: Ulala's Cosmic Attack came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2003, published by THQ. It was part of that wave of games adapting console experiences for handhelds, trying to capture the rhythm of its Dreamcast predecessor on a smaller screen. You step into the shiny boots of Ulala, a rookie reporter for Space Channel 5, tasked with covering an alien invasion that's freezing people with dance beams.
You control Ulala as she moves screen by screen through various locations, from city streets to alien ships. Your main objective is to rescue the hypnotized citizens by correctly mimicking the dance commands shown by the Morolian invaders. The core mechanics are all about timing; you watch the enemy's sequence of directional arrows and button presses, then replicate them precisely. You also use your microphone to interview rescued characters, which sometimes provides hints or progresses the story. The pacing is steady, but the difficulty can spike if your rhythm is off, demanding careful attention to the on-screen cues. It feels like a quirky, portable dance-off where your success hinges entirely on keeping the beat.
