About Sid Meier’s Civilization (win 3.x)
Sid Meier's Civilization is a turn-based strategy game released in 1993 for MS-DOS. Developed by MPS Labs and published by MicroProse Software, the game presents a top-down view of the world where players guide a civilization from ancient times into the future. The core genre combines 4X elements, involving exploration, expansion, exploitation, and extermination, with detailed managerial systems. The player's ultimate objective is to achieve global dominance, either through military conquest or by being the first civilization to launch a successful spacecraft to Alpha Centauri.
Players assume the role of a national leader, beginning with a single settler unit to found their first city. Primary responsibilities involve the construction and management of cities, where citizens are assigned to work surrounding tiles to generate essential resources: food for population growth, production for building units and structures, and trade which can be allocated to wealth, scientific research, or luxury goods to maintain citizen happiness. Progression is structured through the research of technologies across a branching tree, starting with basic discoveries like Alphabet and advancing to modern innovations such as Computers, each unlocking new units, buildings, and sometimes introducing new gameplay considerations like pollution. Players must also manage their government type, which can be changed from initial Despotism to forms like Republic or Democracy, each affecting economic and social dynamics.
Gameplay systems extend beyond city management to include exploration, diplomacy, and military strategy. Players control individual units, including combat forces, settlers for founding new cities and building infrastructure, diplomats for espionage and negotiation, and caravans to establish trade routes. Interaction with other computer-controlled civilizations is a constant factor, ranging from peaceful treaties and technology exchanges to outright warfare. A distinctive feature is the construction of Wonders of the World, unique global projects like the Pyramids that provide significant benefits to the builder but require substantial time and resources to complete. The game world is also populated by independent barbarian units, necessitating military development for defense and expansion throughout the eras.
