Shutokou Racing on the Game Boy Color is one of those late-night, neon-soaked street racers where you’re weaving through Tokyo traffic at questionable speeds. The sprites are tiny, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about squeezing between trucks while your engine whines in 8-bit. Controls are simple—just gas, brake, and a nitro button that feels way too generous—but the traffic patterns keep you on your toes.

First race, you’ll probably clip a taxi and spin out (I did), but once you get the rhythm, it’s got that old-school arcade vibe where you keep telling yourself "one more try." The city backdrop’s surprisingly detailed for a GBC game, with flickering signs and bridges that actually look like Tokyo’s highways. Just don’t expect Forza—this is pure, janky ‘90s handheld racing.

Also, the Japanese version has way better music than the overseas release, so hunt that down if you can.
