I picked up Shrek 2 for the Game Boy Advance back in 2004, a time when movie tie-in games were a common sight on the handheld. Activision published it, and it was one of those titles you'd see on the shelf next to other licensed adventures. It fit right into the era, a side-scrolling action game that tried to capture the film's humor and characters in pixel form.

You control Shrek, and sometimes Fiona or other characters, through a series of levels that mirror the movie's plot. The main goal is to reach Far Far Away and deal with the complications there. You move screen by screen, using your sword to whack enemies like knights and spiders. You also get a bow for Fiona's stages, which adds a bit of ranged combat. The game involves a lot of exploring these small areas, breaking barrels for health, and collecting coins to buy upgrades. The pacing is fairly straightforward, though some enemy patterns can make certain sections tricky. It feels like a simple, sometimes repetitive, but generally competent hack and slash for short bursts of play.
