Shin Sangoku Musou Advance came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2005, developed by Koei. It was part of that wave of attempts to bring console-style action games to the handheld, a time when you saw a lot of ambitious ports and spin-offs. You pick a famous general from the Three Kingdoms era and lead their troops across a grid-based map. Your main goal is to capture enemy bases and defeat rival officers before they can take your main camp. The combat is simple; you mash the attack button for combos and use a single special move that drains your musou gauge. Between fights, you move your character screen by screen, managing a small squad and sometimes finding stat-boosting items in villages. The pace is surprisingly brisk for a strategy game, though some missions can get difficult if enemy officers swarm your position. It feels like a condensed, portable version of a much larger war.
